Jersey, officially the Bailiwick of Jersey, is part of the British Isles, but it is not part of Great Britain or the United Kingdom. Jersey has an international identity separate from that of the UK and Jersey is a self-governing British Crown Dependency. This means that whilst Jersey is not part of the UK or the European Union, the UK is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey.
The Bailiwick of Jersey is located off the coast of Normandy, France and consists of, the main island of Jersey, which is the largest of the Channel Islands, along with surrounding uninhabited islands and rocks collectively named, Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers and Les Pierres de Lecq.
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is calculated on the combined value at the rate of 5%. If the combined value of your goods is over £240, you will need to declare it and pay the GST as well as any applicable excise duty. This includes, the purchase price / value of goods at import, Insurance, commission, packing and freight, taxes and duties applied before and on arrival, such as VAT, CCT (Common Customs Tariff) and excise.
If you are a private individual and the combined GST, excise duty and CCT is £12 or less, it isn’t usually charged. The figure of £12 is called the de minimis, which is the minimum amount of GST collected on imported goods. However, the de minimis level does not apply to businesses and is an administrative provision, not a right, so can be removed at any time by Jersey Customs.
GST in Jersey is calculated on the combined value at the rate of 5%, where the combined value of your goods is over £240.
Contrary to popular belief, Jersey is not tax-free. VAT is not charged on goods, but income tax is still paid, GST is payable on many goods and various other taxes apply.
VAT (value added tax) is not charged in Jersey or on any of the Channel Islands.
